Es wird erwartet, dass die wichtigsten Fraktionen des Europäischen Parlaments bei einem politischen Treffen am Mittwoch (5. Juli) einen gemeinsamen Standpunkt zu der neuen Cybersicherheitsverordnung finden werden.

Der ukrainische Präsident Wolodymyr Selenskyj wird am Donnerstag auf Einladung der bulgarischen Regierung Bulgarien besuchen. Dies wird als Zeichen der Wertschätzung für die bisherige militärische Unterstützung der Ukraine durch das Land gewertet. 

Das schwedische Zentrum gegen gewalttätigen Extremismus (CVE) hat Schweden aufgefordert, sein Gesetz über die öffentliche Ordnung zu ändern, um sicherzustellen, dass öffentliche Veranstaltungen wie Koranverbrennungen verboten werden können, wenn sie die nationale Sicherheit gefährden.

Die politischen Entscheidungsträger in Athen erwägen, die Schwelle für den Einzug einer politischen Partei ins Parlament zu erhöhen. Zuletzt hatten es zwei neue rechtsextreme Parteien ins Parlament geschafft.

Statt dem Aufruf der französischen Regierung nach nationaler Einheit zu folgen, streiten sich Politiker, vor allem der radikalen Linken und der Regierung, über ihre Rolle bei der Anstiftung oder Beruhigung der Unruhen. Derweil geht die Gewalt zurück.

Die irische Regierung hat am Dienstag ihre Unterstützung für Unternehmen, die auf Solarenergie umsteigen, verbessert und ein laufendes Programm, das Zuschüsse für Photovoltaikanlagen gewährt, für eine breitere Palette von Unternehmen geöffnet.

Österreichs Klimaziel für 2030 wird nicht rechtzeitig erreicht werden, wie der am Dienstag präsentierte Nationale Energie- und Klimaplan (NEKP) zeigt. Jetzt werden Vorschläge eingeholt, wie die Lücke noch zu schließen ist.

Der spanische Ministerpräsident Pedro Sánchez hat sich für eine stärker föderalistische EU ausgesprochen und gleichzeitig eine Mandatsverlängerung für EU-Kommissionschefin Ursula von der Leyen und NATO-Generalsekretär Jens Stoltenberg unterstützt.

A delegation of AFET Members travelled to Santiago and Valparaíso (Chile) and Brasília (Brazil) from 18 to 23 June 2023. The main goal of this mission was to discuss how to make a qualitative leap in the EU-Latin America strategic bi-regional partnership in view of the CELAC-EU Summit on 17-18 July 2023.
Members held meetings with Chilean and Brazilian authorities to discuss global and regional security dynamics against the backdrop of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and the assertive behaviour of China. The visit allowed to exchange views on the state of bilateral relations in view of the forthcoming ratification of the EU-Chile Advanced Framework Agreement by the European Parliament and reinvigorating the strategic partnership with Brazil.

A delegation of seven AFET Members travelled to Washington D.C. and Wisconsin, United States from 15 to 19 May. The main goal of the mission was to establish and deepen the political dialogue with the US administration and meet counterparts in Congress, following the US mid-term elections. Members held meetings with Government and Congress representatives in Washington D.C., as well as think tanks
The visit to Wisconsin, a swing and bellwether State, provided AFET members with an in-depth look into the political climate of grass-roots America from a transatlantic perspective. In addition to meeting the political authorities and institutions of the State of Wisconsin, Members also met management and students form the Jean Monnet Programme on European and Global studies at the University of Madison - Wisconsin, representatives of the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce and the Trade Unions.The mission was the first AFET mission to the US under the Biden administration and also the first AFET mission to Wisconsin.

The visit in Wisconsin allowed members to feel the political temperature outside Washington D.C. and particularly in a state like Wisconsin, which is in a very special political situation due to the gerrymandering and the resulting blockages of the legislative process.

On 6 July 2023 Members of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) and the Committee on Budgets (BUDG) will hold a debate with a representative of the European Commission on the proposal for the Ukraine Facility.
This new single financing instrument aims to provide coherent, predictable and flexible support to Ukraine for the period 2024-2027, catering both for short-term recovery needs and medium-term reconstruction and the modernisation of Ukraine, with a clear link to the country's accession path.

The foreseen overall amount of the Facility is up to €50 billion. A comprehensive plan proposed by and agreed with Ukraine will serve as the overarching framework for reforms and investments, underpinned by a set of conditions and a clear timeline for disbursements. Following the presentation, the two co-legislators, the European Parliament and the Council will examine the proposal, with the view to a timely adoption.
