Continuity, relevance and impact: according to Michael O’Flaherty, the new director of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), these are the priorities of the FRA presented in the Council Working Party on Fundamental Rights, Citizens Rights and Free Movement of Persons (FREMP). Mr O’Flaherty was speaking on 8 March, at the first meeting of the Working Party to be held during the Netherlands Presidency.

Plenartagung : Um die zunehmende Resistenz von Bakterien gegen Antibiotika zu bekämpfen, sollte die Verwendung bestehender antimikrobieller Medikamente eingeschränkt und die Entwicklung neuer Wirkstoffe vorangebracht werden, so die Abgeordneten. Am Donnerstag haben sie die Überarbeitung eines EU-Gesetzes zu Tierarzneimitteln verabschiedet und sich darin für ein Verbot kollektiver und vorbeugender Antibiotikabehandlung bei Tieren sowie die Förderung der Erforschung neuer Medikamente ausgesprochen.

Plenary sessions : If the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia can break its current political stalemate, hold free and fair elections soon and put its reforms back on track, then there should be no further obstacles to starting EU accession talks with it, say MEPs in a resolution voted on Thursday. Plenary sessions : MEPs voted emergency measures into law on Thursday to help Tunisia’s economy by importing 70,000 tonnes of its virgin olive oil duty free in 2016/17, after adding safeguards for EU olive oil producers. These include a mid-term assessment of the effects of the measures, updating them if they turn out to be harmful, and ensuring that the imports are tracked from start to finish.

On 9 March 2016, the Council agreed on an emergency support mechanism in response to the difficult humanitarian situation caused by the refugee crisis notably in Greece. This enables the EU to help Greece and other affected member states to address the humanitarian needs of the large numbers of arrivals of men, women and children.
