The EU-Western Balkans summit took place in Sofia, Bulgaria, on 17 May 2018. EU leaders agreed on the Sofia declaration, with which the Western Balkans partners have aligned themselves.

Upon his arrival in Sofia, President Tusk outlined the main topics for discussion: Western Balkans summit, innovation and digital, Iran and US trade.

The European Union reaffirms its commitment to combat all forms of discrimination and hate crime, on the grounds of sexual orientation, gender identity and sex characteristics, and to continue to actively promote and protect the human rights of LGBTI persons.

President Donald Tusk addressed a letter and the Leaders' Agenda note on innovation and the digital economy to the 28 heads of state or government before their meetings in Sofia.

The EU and Tunisia have published a joint press statement on the occasion of the 14th meeting of the EU-Tunisia Association Council, held in Brussels on 15 May 2018.

The Council adopted a decision allowing for the creation of a crime information cell within EUNAVFOR MED Operation Sophia.

The Council adopted the effort sharing regulation which sets out binding emission reduction targets for member states.

The Council approved a regulation on greenhouse gas emissions and removals from land use and forestry in the 2030 climate & energy framework (LULUCF).

The Council adopted a decision on streamlining environmental reporting rules in order to enhance legal clarity and reduce administrative burden.

The Council formally approves a revised directive on the energy performance of buildings.

Olli Rehn, früher Vizepräsident der EU-Kommission und für verantwortlich für Wirtschaft und Währung, ist heute an die Spitze der finnischen Notenbank gewählt worden.

In Italien haben sich die Fünf-Sterne Bewegung zusammen mit der Lega auf ein gemeinsames Regierungsprogramm einigen können. Damit fehlt nur noch ein Premierminister.
